Multimedia, Multipathway, and Multireceptor (3MRA) Assessment Strategy (October 1999) describes the overall direction for the risk assessment. The assessment is a forward-calculating analysis that evaluates the multiple exposure pathway risks to human and ecological receptors. A forward-calculating analysis starts with a chemical concentration in a waste management unit, estimates the release and transport of the chemical in various environmental media, and predicts the exposure and risk that result from those concentrations. The strategy also describes the probabilistic approach to the assessment and explains how the results provide an estimate of risk on a national scale. Finally, the strategy describes several different analytical levels that the assessment could follow depending on available resources and the amount and quality of available data. For this analysis, we did not implement the strategy to its fullest extent.
