Idling Management
  • The Cleveland Municipal School District implemented an idling reduction program throughout the district, restricting run time after vehicle start up to 5 minutes.

Clean School BusFunds
  • USEPA award $67,975 to Regional Air Pollution Control Agency (RAPCA)with 2003 funds to retrofit 70 buses with diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs). RAPCA is assisting a small, urban school district that provides bus service to mentally retarded children with this retrofit project. This project will include several public outreach components to reduce diesel emission.
  • USEPA awarded $250,000 to Cleveland Municipal School District (CMSD) with 2003 funds to retrofit 40 buses with diesel particulate filters (DPF) and fueling these buses with ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel. The district took its first step in purchasing 7,500 gallons of ULSD fuel and will purchase approximately 131,932 additional gallons with this grant. An idling management program will be established.
  • USEPA awarded $66,000 to Bexley City School District with 2005 funds. Bexley City will replace two 1980 model year diesel school buses with new, cleaner buses and will retrofit six others with catalysts and closed crankcase ventilation systems.
  • USEPA awarded $300,000 to Cleveland Municipal School District (CMSD) with 2005 funds.
    CMSD will retrofit approximately 45 diesel school buses with diesel particulate filters and will fuel the fleet with ultra low sulfur diesel fuel.
  • USEPA awarded $29,993 to Cuyahoga County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (Board) with 2005 funds. The Board, which operates several schools, will retrofit 39 specially equipped school buses with DOCs.
National Funds
  • USEPA awarded $95,500 Hamilton County to support the Regional Ozone Coalition, which focused on installing 91 DOCs on school buses and fueling them with biodiesel. Hamilton County contributed $15,000 to the project.
  • USEPA's Office of Air and Radiation provided $150,000 to Cleveland Municipal School District (CMSD) as part of the Cleveland Air Toxics Pilot Project (Cleveland Clean Air Century Campaign) to retrofit. 23 buses with diesel particulate filters and use Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel. In addition, CMSD implemented an anti-idling program throughout the district, restricting run time after vehicle start up to 5 minutes. Part of the Award was provided to the Cuyahoga County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities to install catalysts on 29 buses. It also was used to purchase five new engines for City of Cleveland Heights municipal vehicles.

  • USEPA awarded $50,000 to Cleveland Municipal School District using Sensitive Population funds to retrofit 7 school buses with DPFs.

  • USEPA SmartWay Transport Partnership Program awarded Ohio Department of Development $500,000 to evaluate optimal locations for truck stop electrification in Ohio, with one facility being installed in at least one location.

Supplemental Environment Projects
  • State SEP - Electro/Prince Plating, through hazardous waste settlements in March 2004, provided $40,000 to purchase and install 6 DPFs in Cleveland Municipal School District school buses. This resulted due to the Ohio EPA's continued support of the Cleveland Clean Air Century Campaign.

  • Federal SEP - Through a Consent Decree, Caterpillar used $40,000 to retrofit 26 pieces of cargo-handling equipment (tow motors and cranes) at the Port of Cleveland with DOCs.
Privately Funded Projects
  • Cinergy Foundations is providing $100,000 in funding to purchase and install 135 DOCs on school buses in Hamilton County, Ohio.
