The principal focus of this project is the mapping and interpretation of landscape scale (i.e., broad scale) ecological metrics among hydrologic units of the Upper White River region, within the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and Missouri (USA). The biophysical relationships between human activities in this region and the condition of surface water resources and the biological characteristics of the landscape are not well understood. Thus, EPA is undertaking these analyses of field-based, remote sensing, and geospatial data to improve understanding of the distribution of these phenomena, and their interrelationships.

This website browser is designed to present some key ecological metrics to the public and research communities and additional results will be incorporated within this format as the additional analyses are completed. Because of the large area involved in this ecological assessment we relied heavily on remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) techniques to measure the potential for ecological disturbance in the region. The EPA's efforts to assess broad scale disturbances in the Upper White River region uses multispectral satellite data processing, spatial data set merging, and GIS modeling to produce maps of the area.
