Presentations from GreenScapes Workshops Conducted at the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) 2006 Annual Meeting & Expo
Building Sustainable Sites from the Ground Up
There was standing room only for the two GreenScapes workshops conducted at the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) 2006 Annual Meeting & Expo held October 6-9, 2006 in Minneapolis. The ASLA Annual Meeting & Expo was held for the first time in conjunction with the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) World Congress. The ASLA annual event alone draws more than 5,000 landscape architects and designers. The theme of this year's event was Green Solutions for a Blue Planet and focused on global efforts at sustainability.
GreenScapes presented two forums Building Sustainable Sites from the Ground Up:
- The first session shared state-of-the-art knowledge on the science of soil health and techniques for restoring or establishing healthy soils including the bioremediation and restoration of contaminated/ Brownfield sites; erosion control using sustainable best management practices; and saving money and improving performance with environmentally preferable products and practices.

- The second session addressed the best available tools and products for designing and achieving efficient water use in the landscape. Included was information on low impact development, reducing the need for costly water supply and wastewater treatment facilities, maintaining stream flows and healthy aquatic habitats, and reducing the energy used to pump and treat irrigation water through the use of water-efficient irrigation techniques and technologies all of which can also result in less green waste generation.

- Advancements in Irrigation Efficiency: Saving Water in the Landscape (PDF) (18 pp, 1.2MB) Andy Smith, Irrigation Association
Close to 500 people attended each workshop (more than any other workshop being held) with many potential attendees being closed out due to the over-flow conditions and demand for these two sessions.
