2005 Grants

EPA announced the award of $7.5 million to 37 school districts around the nation for projects designed to lower diesel emissions in school bus fleets. Of these, six of the projects are located in Region 5. The projects will replace older diesel school buses with new, less-polluting models and retrofit others with emissions control technology and cleaner fuels.

Michigan

Okemos Public Schools

The Okemos Public School District, located in the greater Lansing, Michigan area, will equip 372 buses with diesel oxidation catalysts in school districts in 25 non-attainment counties in Michigan. Federal grant: $388,519.

Traverse City Area Public Schools

Traverse City will replace one 1984 model year diesel school bus and will retrofit 120 others with diesel oxidation catalysts. Federal grant: $140,365.

Ohio

Bexley City School District

Bexley City will replace two 1980 model year diesel school buses with new, cleaner buses and will retrofit six others with diesel oxidation catalysts and closed crankcase ventilation systems. Federal grant: $66,600.

Cleveland Municipal School District

The Cleveland Municipal School District will retrofit approximately 45 diesel school buses with diesel particulate filters and will fuel the fleet with ultra low sulfur diesel fuel. Federal grant: $300,000.

Cuyahoga County Board of Mental Retardation

The Cuyahoga County Board of Mental Retardation, which operates several schools, will retrofit 39 specially equipped school buses with diesel oxidation catalysts. Federal grant: $29,993.

Wisconsin

Madison Metropolitan School District

Approximately 253 diesel-fueled buses will be retrofitted with diesel oxidation catalysts and 47 buses with closed crankcase ventilation systems. The project will take place in southern Wisconsin and a number of school districts will participate. Federal grant: $291,470.
