Japanese Nuclear Emergency: Radiation Monitoring

EPA's RadNet Data

EPA no longer updates the information at this link, but it may be useful as a reference or resource. This site contains information and data from March 11, 2011 to June 30, 2011. EPA has returned to routine RadNet operations. This site will continue to be available for historical and informative purposes.

For real-time air monitoring data, please visit the EPA RadNet website and Central Data Exchange. To view both current and historical laboratory data, please visit our Envirofacts database.

EPA's nationwide radiation monitoring system, RadNet, measures radiation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The system consists of two components stationary and deployable air monitors The map below provides links to air monitoring results presented as graphs for data collected between March 1, 2011 and June 30, 2011. For real-time air monitoring data, please visit the EPA RadNet webpage.

In addition, EPA routinely samples air, precipitation, drinking water and milk to test for radiation in a laboratory. In response to the Japanese nuclear incident, EPA accelerated its routine sampling schedule. This page provides links to results from samples taken between March 11, 2011 and June 30, 2011. To view data results for other dates, please visit our Envirofacts webpage.

EPA also provided data summaries in response to the Japanese nuclear incident and more information about air monitoring data and laboratory data.

On May 6, 2011, we released the new map below, which contains more information than our original version. The links to data from this map will show laboratory and air monitoring results from March 1, 2011 to June 30, 2011 only. To view data results for other dates, please visit our Envirofacts webpage. For real-time air monitoring data, please visit the EPA RadNet webpage. To see the data for a particular location, point your mouse at the colored dot or click the gray dots to see the types of data available. You can find the same information when viewing monitoring locations by state below.

Hints for navigating around the map
  • Zoom: use the + and - icons at the top left, double-click, or roll your mouse wheel
  • Move around the map: hold down the left mouse button and move the mouse

Laboratory Data

As of April 5, 2011, EPA presented its laboratory data in an interactive format and limited the release of sampling results in pdf format. This is part of our continued effort to make the data more useful to the public. The previously released pdfs are still available below, and are also incorporated into the interactive results posted on this page.
