Genzyme Corporation – MA Sites

The Genzyme Corporation is a pharmaceutical company that produces medical products and services in a wide variety of medical fields. In 2008, Genzyme Corporation diverted a total of more than 1,000 tons of waste from the landfill. This was the result of a waste prevention rate of 52 percent and a recycling rate of 48 percent, both of which were made possible by the coordinated efforts of employees, management, and the environmental department. Genzyme is also a leader in green buildings, having built one of the first corporate office buildings to receive LEED Platinum Certification. The company was named by Innovest Strategic Advisors as one of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World based on effective management of environmental, social, and corporate governance risks and opportunities.

Allergan, Inc.

Allergan, Inc. is a pharmaceutical company that has worked to substantially reduce its carbon footprint. By tracking energy use in real time, Allergan was able to analyze consumption and quickly identify energy saving opportunities. In 2008, the company reduced its energy use by more than 11 million kWh, for annual greenhouse gas savings of more than 3,900 tons. To further reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Allergan reached out to suppliers, customers, and the community. The company sponsored awareness campaigns, promoted car-free days, and held educational events for local schools. They also reduced their waste by more than 1,800 tons. These efforts not only helped Allergan reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but saved the company more than $1.7 million.
