Neighborhoods are often plagued by contamination from leaking underground storage tanks (LUSTs). Contamination seeps underground – tainting soil and drinking water sources. Often, facilities are abandoned or under state enforcement orders for clean up by unwilling owners.
In Region 4, more than 152,000 underground storage tanks (USTs) store petroleum or hazardous substances that can potentially harm the environment and human health, if the contents are released. Last year, 1,661 releases were reported from USTs in Region 4.
Last year, Region 4 awarded more than $9.5 million in UST Trust Fund cleanup grants, and completed 3,204 cleanups. However, there still more than 29,000 cleanups awaiting to be completed.
The Recovery Act will send much needed federal dollars to our states to further assess and cleanup past releases from regulated underground storage tanks. Infusion of critically needed dollars - over 4.5 times the typical annual funding for Region 4 - will help speed recovery and investment in many of our communities, while working to clean up LUST sites.
