Brownfields Program. EPA's brownfields program is a proven, results-oriented program that has changed the way contaminated property is perceived, addressed and managed in New England. The Brownfields program encourages redevelopment of abandoned and contaminated waste sites littered throughout community after community. Brownfields Program in Region 1: Since the beginning of EPA’s Brownfields program in 1995, more than $179 million has been provided to New England communities to assess, clean up and return land to productive uses. Since 1995, EPA's Brownfields assistance in New England has leveraged more than $10.4 billion in cleanup and redevelopment funding and more than 47,000 jobs in cleanup, construction, and redevelopment. Last year (2008), EPA provided about $21 million for brownfields programs to the six New England states. Within the past year, EPA Brownfields funds have helped provide training for approximately 170 workers to learn skills that translate to well-paying jobs. Specifically, Brownfields job training grants were targeted in locations such as New Bedford, Mass., Waterbury, Conn. and Norwalk, Conn.
In addition, EPA New England in 2008 sent Brownfields money to communities like Bath, Maine ($400,000), Bennington County, Vermont ($200,000), Woonsocket, R.I. ($600,000) and Berlin, N.H. ($200,000).
Recovery Act of 2009. The Recovery Act will direct $100 million nationwide to continue the important work of assessing and cleaning properties, redeveloping neighborhoods, training professionals and creating skilled jobs. This grant money will be allocated to projects based on a competitive review of project proposals.
