Underground Storage Tank Program. In the Mid-Atlantic Region, about 60,500 underground storage tanks (USTs) store petroleum or hazardous substances that can harm the environment and human health if the USTs release their stored contents. Last year, just over 900 releases were reported from underground storage tanks in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Today, about 6,000 clean ups are waiting to be completed. Neighborhoods are often plagued by contamination from leaking underground storage tanks. Contamination seeps underground – tainting soil and water sources. Often, facilities are abandoned or under state enforcement orders for clean up by unwilling owners. Last year, Mid-Atlantic states received about $5.7 million and completed about 1,632 cleanups.
Recovery Act of 2009. The Recovery Act sends much needed federal dollars to assess and clean up underground storage tank leaks. Infusion of critically needed dollars - over three times the typical annual funding for the five Mid-Atlantic States and Washington, D.C. - will help speed recovery and investment in many of our communities.
