- Brownfields Job Training Grants: an estimated $5 million is available under the Recovery Act
Brownfields Program in Region 3: Since the beginning of EPA’s Brownfields program in 1995, more than $88 million has been provided to Mid-Atlantic states and communities to assess, clean up and return land to productive uses. Since 1995, EPA's Brownfields assistance nationally has leveraged more than $10.4 billion in cleanup and redevelopment funding and more than 47,000 jobs in cleanup, construction, and redevelopment. Assessments have been performed on more than 11,700 properties and over 250 properties have been cleaned up. Learn more about Brownfields issues in the Mid-Atlantic states.
One such successful project, Civic Works, a non-profit AmeriCorps program located in Baltimore, will use $200,000 in funding received this year to train 40 students and place at least 30 graduates in entry-level environmental jobs helping to clean up abandoned and contaminated properties in Baltimore. This is the fourth EPA brownfields training grant awarded to Civic Works since 2000. Three other grants for $200,000 each were used to train 165 people and place 122 graduates in jobs.
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act): Will direct $100 million nationwide to continue the important work of assessing and cleaning up properties, redeveloping neighborhoods, training professionals, and creating skilled jobs. This grant money will be allocated to projects based on a competitive review of project proposals. A website has been created and will be updated to provide the latest available information on any assessment, cleanup, or job training grants awarded for brownfields projects in the Mid-Atlantic states.
