Superfund Program. EPA's Superfund program has identified, analyzed and worked to clean up thousands of hazardous waste sites since 1980. Currently, the Mid-Atlantic Region has 172 sites that have been included or proposed to be included on the Superfund National Priority List (NPL). Forty-two sites have been cleaned up and deleted from the Listing. Learn more about the Superfund program.
Recovery Act of 2009. The Recovery Act will direct additional dollars to help protect people and the environment from contamination at our worst sites by expediting the pace of clean-ups so our land and environment will more quickly be ready to return to productive use.
Funding for site cleanup provides for construction jobs as well as future economic development as property is reused. It also helps to involve states, Tribes, local communities and other partners to formulate plans for the future use of these once off-limit properties.
