“EPA Region 2 is responsible for ensuring those facilities in New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, whether public or private, are complying with environmental requirements at a minimum and for encouraging facilities to strive for environmental leadership in the world as the ideal. This is accomplished by successfully combining all of the tools at our disposal from environmental assistance through criminal enforcement. It is also not accomplished alone but through partnerships with other federal agencies, state agencies, environmental and community organizations, the regulated community, and the public.

Puerto Rico Land Authority Agrees to Stop Clearing Wetlands in Guanica, PR Protecting Coral Reefs
EPA Region 2 has signed a legal agreement with the Puerto Rico Land Authority to stop the Land Authority from damaging wetlands on a property in Guanica, Puerto Rico. The damage to these wetlands has jeopardized water quality in the bay and threatens sensitive coral reefs,” said EPA Regional Administrator Judith A. Enck. “Wetlands provide enormous environmental benefits for people and wildlife. They trap floodwater, filter pollution and are particularly effective in controlling the sediment that washes into rivers, lakes, streams and bays.”
