Clean Automotive Technology

Developing Cleaner and More Efficient Vehicles and Engines for Tomorrow

EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality spearheads a range of programs to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from mobile sources. Among them is the Clean Automotive Technology program located at EPA’s National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The goal of the Clean Automotive Technology program is to research, evaluate, and develop advanced vehicle engine and drivetrain technologies that help increase fuel efficiency, reduce regulated criteria emissions such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), and cut greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve this goal, the Clean Automotive Technology program focuses on developing technologies that are clean, efficient and cost-effective for both the consumer and manufacturer.

Through public-private partnerships called Cooperative Research and Development Agreements, or CRADAs , EPA works with the automotive industry to develop and demonstrate new engine and vehicle prototypes based on unique EPA engine and drivetrain technologies. These partnerships help prove the environmental and economic viability of these innovative technologies.

They also help EPA's industry partners take the next step: moving innovative technologies from the lab to the road. Industry benefits from having new economically viable products to introduce to the world market, and consumers benefit from cleaner, more efficient vehicles.

In addition to innovative research, EPA provides Technical and Analytical Support through the Clean Automotive Technology program.
