Human activities alter the way water moves through the landscape. Natural landscapes retain and slow the movement of water. Water retained in this way naturally replenishes the ground water supply, where most of our drinking water comes from. The loss of these natural landscapes would result in the need for more man-made reservoirs and desalination plants at much greater economic costs.
