Bibliographic Database Guide

Guide to Submitting Information to the EMAP Bibliographic Database

Introduction

The EMAP Bibliographic Database presents publication types in formats ascribed to by the Council of Biology Editors (1994). The publication types include: book, book section, conference proceedings, journal article, report, special volume, thesis and workshop. Entry of citation information is presented by publication type. Documentation on format, length and definition of each field is presented below and accessed from the data entry screen. Data entry in specific formats and lengths is necessary to present the proper citation formats on the EMAP Home Page.

Procedure/Data Entry

To submit citations to the EMAP Bibliographic Database, the following is suggested:

  1. Become familiar with the citation fields and formats in the table below. The documentation for each field consists of:

      a) Name: Name of attribute (variable)
      b) Format: Data type and length
      c) Definition: Description of attribute, followed by example data in specified format

  2. Review the EMAP Bibliography on the EMAP Home Page at: http://oaspub.epa.gov/emap/bib.search (Alternate Access)
  3. Review the example publication type entries:

  4. Choose the appropriate publication type from the list on the web form to access a data entry form.
  5. Fill in the data entry screen. You are able to access format information at each field.

      a) Start data entry in the first space of each block.
      b) For each field, only enter the punctuation as it appears in the described format. The only other punctuation necessary is that within a publication title, a conference or workshop name or an abstract.
      c) Enter all publication titles in lower case, except the initial word.
      d) For Authors and Editors, up to five entries may be made on the first screen, click on the appropriate link for additional entries. Authors or editors should be listed according to rank.
      e) For fields potentially longer than 80 characters, such as publication title, there is a scrolling mechanism that allows users to type on one line until the field is finished. For the Abstract, a hard return can be entered at any time.
      f) Leave fields blank for which there are no data.
      g) Enter 'Comments' about the publication, if necessary.

  6. Review the information before pressing the SUBMIT button.
  7. Repeat the process with the same or another publication type.
  8. The information will be transmitted to EMAP IM personnel for review. Expect a 5 working day delay before the citation appears on the web site.

ABSTRACT: The Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) is a national program developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in response to the need for information about the degree to which existing pollution control programs and policies protect the nation's ecological resources. EMAP - Estuaries represents one portion of EMAP's efforts in near coastal environments. These efforts are designed to provide a quantitative assessment of the regional extent of coastal environmental problems by measuring status and change in selected condition indicators.

PAGES: 316-8

ABSTRACT: Dissolved oxygen concentration is an important characteristic of estuarine systems that is used to describe the results of eutrophication and to assess its effects on biota. Although dissolved oxygen can be measured accurately, we used Monte Carlo sampling from 16 semi-continuous dissolved oxygen records collected from estuaries along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts to show that the large temporal variability in DO causes typical sampling protocols to inaccurately characterize dissolved oxygen conditions at a site.

ABSTRACT: Although numerous investigators have noted changes in macrophage aggregates (MA) when comparing contaminated and reference sites, there is little information available as to the factors which may affect the accumulation of these structures. We are interested in assessing their usefulness as indicators of environmental stress as well as in examining the effects of other factors such as fish species, age, and parasite load. The use of splenic and hepatic MA parameters was evaluated in estuarine and freshwater systems.

ABSTRACT: High resolution land use/land cover information from stream riparian areas is useful in understanding instream biotic assemblages, and is often not available for geographical research. A classification system was developed which provides the types of information about the riparian buffer thought to be important in providing good habitat for, or disturbing the habitat of, aquatic biota. Using this classification, large scale airphotos of fifteen western Oregon steams were interpreted.
