Basic Information
EPA’s Tribal Waste Management Program encourages safe municipal solid and hazardous waste management practices in Indian Country that are protective of human health and the environment. The Tribal Waste Management Program follows the principles in EPA’s 1984 American Indian Policy (PDF) (4 pp, 212K, about PDF). Current federal policy in the United States recognizes tribal sovereignty and works with tribes on a government-to-government basis.
Goals and Strategy
Program Goals and Results: The tribal waste program has two Government Performance and Result Act targets, one focused on aiding tribes in developing Integrated Waste Management Plans (IWMPs) and the other for addressing open dumps.
The Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response Tribal Strategy (PDF) (55 pp, 1.5MB, about PDF) is a national document which identifies key program strategies and activities that EPA believes are particularly important areas of focus and which the Agency intends to support with available technical and financial resources during the next five years.
