- Develop a shared understanding of the nature and value proposition of servicizing business models
- Identify drivers and barriers that are encouraging or impeding adoption of servicizing approaches, especially those that offer environmental benefits
- Identify approaches for quantifying benefits
- Explore potential actions that could help promote wide-spread adoption of servicing approaches, especially those that offer environmental benefits
- Understand servicizing’s role in a sustainable economy

Opening Remarks and Introductions
Sandra Connors, Acting Deputy Director, Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery
The Product-to-Service Transition in the Economy – Servicizing Trends and Models
Allen White, Vice President and Senior Fellow, Tellus Institute, and Mark Stoughton, Senior Associate, Cadmus, described the growing trend toward service-oriented business approaches and discussed different applications across industry sectors. Discussion included the “green servicizing” spectrum, life cycle concepts, and how servicizing fits into a sustainable economy.
The Look and Feel of Servicizing – Different approaches in Action!
Service providers and customers described real-world examples of servicizing approaches being applied. They shared insights on drivers, challenges, and benefits they have and are experiencing. Speakers included:

Through a facilitated dialogue, participants explored common characteristics and lessons learned that may inform their work as providers and customers.
Why are Individuals and Organizations Embracing Servicing Approaches?
Paul Ligon, Managing Director, Waste Management-GreenOps, shared his experience on the product-to-service transition through the waste and recycling perspective. He offered insight into the value proposition of servicizing throughout the supply chain and the opportunities this offers.
Through facilitated dialogue, participants shared their own perspectives on the benefits, drivers, and opportunities of servicizing approaches, with special emphasis on drivers leading to implementation of greener servicizing approaches.
What Gets in the Way of Doing More Servicizing and Greener Servicizing?
The group brainstormed and explored barriers and challenges to implementing and scaling up servicizing approaches from provider and customer perspectives. There was a special emphasis on barriers confronting adoption of greener versions of these servicizing approaches.

Reflections on Day 1
Workshop organizers will recap what we heard in day 1 including the common characteristics and differences in the implementing servicizing across the various business sectors represented that were shared the previous day.
What Can We Do to Advance Servicizing Approaches?
Dr. Joseph Fiksel, Sustainability Advisor, US EPA Office of Research & Development; Executive Director, Center for Resilience at Ohio State University, talked about comprehensive life cycle assessment (based on functional unit) capabilities to provide a fair comparison between a servicized model and a traditional product-based business model.

Robert McNamara, Partner-Strategy Practice, Accenture and Nicholas Shufro, Advisory Director, Sustainability and Climate Change, PricewaterhouseCoopers, described the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s Vision 2050 and their perspective on the importance of and opportunities in the shift from products to services and “cross-sector” convergences.

Kristian Henriksen, Special Advisor and Project Manager, Danish Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs, provided an overview of the Nordic Countries interest in and efforts toward wider dissemination of green business models in the Nordic region.
Afterwards, participants brainstormed ideas for realizing more widespread adoption of servicizing approaches, generally, and green servicizing approaches, in particular. Discussions focused on gathering participants’ ideas about potential roles and actions on the part of customers, providers, and government, especially US EPA.
