On July 17, 1997, EPA issued new air quality standards for ozone and particulate matter, otherwise known as smog and soot. The updated standards will provide increased public health protection from the health effects associated with these pollutants.

Under the Federal Advisory Committee Act, EPA established the Subcommittee for Ozone, Particulate Matter and Regional Haze Implementation Programs in September 1995 to provide advice and recommendations on implementation strategies for new ozone and particulate matter air quality standards and a regional haze program.
