EPA Goal 2: Protecting America’s Waters |
Purpose
The Great Lakes are one of our most important natural resources—they are
the largest freshwater system on earth, and they support agriculture, transportation,
and recreation. But they also face many threats, including invasive species, oil
spills and other pollution, overfishing, and habitat degradation. NOAA is working
to address these issues through its Great Lakes Habitat Restoration Program,
which plans, implements, and funds coastal habitat restoration projects throughout
the region. The program works to protect and restore Great Lakes coastal
habitats through recovery of damages from natural resource damage claims and
community-based restoration efforts. NOAA is also working with the EPA on the
Great Lakes Restoration Initiative to address restoration priorities in Areas
of Concern and environmentally degraded areas within the Great Lakes basin.

Geographic Program: Great Lakes Restoration Initiative:
The goal of the Great Lakes (GL) Program is to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the
Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem as required by the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and the Clean Water Act. EPA leads 16 federal
agencies in development and implementation of a GL Restoration Initiative to achieve that goal, including overseeing international
commitments in the GL Water Quality Agreement. GL Restoration Initiative funding is provided through EPA's GL National
Program Office, as described below.
