EPA Goal 2: Protecting America’s Waters

Animal Feeding Operations (AFO)

Purpose
EPA defines Animal Feeding Operations (AFOs) as agricultural enterprises where animals are kept and raised in confined situations. AFOs congregate animals, feed, manure and urine, dead animals, and production operations on a small land area. USDA’s goal is for AFO owners and operators to take voluntary actions to minimize potential air and water pollutants from storage facilities, confinement areas, and land application areas. Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) can help landowners achieve this goal by providing technical and in many cases financial assistance, for the adoption of practices that will protect our natural resources..

Drinking Water Programs:
This program comprises the multiple-barrier approach to protecting public health from unsafe drinking water. Under this approach, the Agency protects public health through: source water assessment and protection programs; promulgation of new or revised, scientifically sound and risk-based National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWRs); training, technical assistance and financial assistance programs to enhance systems’ capacity to comply with existing and new regulations; and the national implementation of NPDWRs by state and tribal drinking water programs through regulatory, non-regulatory and voluntary programs and policies to ensure safe drinking water.

Authorizing Legislation
• Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA)
• Clean Water Act (CWA)
