EPA Goal 2: Protecting America’s Waters

Global Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Program

Purpose
CDC’s global Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) program provides expertise and interventions aimed at saving lives and reducing illness by improving global access to healthy and safe water, adequate sanitation, and improved hygiene. The WASH program works on long-term prevention and control measures for improving health, reducing poverty, and improving socio-economic development as well as responding to global emergencies and outbreaks of life-threatening illnesses. These improvements reduce the lethal impact of WASH-related diseases ranging from cholera to typhoid fever to hepatitis. The WASH program is focused in six areas: (1) making water safe to drink and use, (2) improving hygiene and sanitation, (3) responding to complex international emergencies and outbreaks, (4) controlling and eliminating disease, (5) identifying and characterizing disease, and (6) educating and training about global water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Drinking Water Programs:
This program comprises the multiple-barrier approach to protecting public health from unsafe drinking water. Under this approach, the Agency protects public health through: source water assessment and protection programs; promulgation of new or revised, scientifically sound and risk-based National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWRs); training, technical assistance and financial assistance programs to enhance systems’ capacity to comply with existing and new regulations; and the national implementation of NPDWRs by state and tribal drinking water programs through regulatory, non-regulatory and voluntary programs and policies to ensure safe drinking water.

Authorizing Legislation
• Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA)
• Clean Water Act (CWA)
