and Preventing Pollution

National Advisory Committee for Acute Exposure Guideline Levels (FEMA)

Purpose
The Development of Acute Exposure Guideline Levels (AEGLs) is a collaborative effort of the public and private sectors worldwide. AEGLs are intended to describe the risk to humans resulting from once-in-a-lifetime, or rare, exposure to airborne chemicals. The National Advisory Committee for the Development of Acute Exposure Guideline Levels for Hazardous Substances (AEGL Committee) is involved in developing these guidelines to help both national and local authorities, as well as private companies, deal with emergencies involving spills, or other catastrophic exposures.

Homeland Security: Preparedness, Response, and Recovery
This program involves activities that help the public prepare, respond, and recover from terrorist incidents. This includes clarifying EPA’s roles and responsibilities, promoting improved response capabilities within the government and industry, and developing, disseminating, and exercising new and improved tools, techniques, and capacity for responding to chemical, biological, and radiological incidents. Preparedness and response activities such as planning, training, and participation in exercises will ensure readiness of EPA personnel.
