EPA Goal 3: Cleaning Up Communities and
Advancing Sustainable Development

Bureau of Indian Affairs – Division of Environmental and Cultural Resources Management

Purpose
The mission of the Division of Environmental and Cultural Resources Management is to provide expert assistance and advice to the Director, Office of Facilities, Environmental and Cultural Resources, the Deputy Assistant Secretary, Management and the Assistant Secretary-Indian Affairs on all matters involving environmental and cultural resources laws which apply to, or might affect Indian trust lands or restricted lands and federal facilities owned or operated by Indian Affairs. The Division provides leadership, guidance, policy and support for the protection of environmental and cultural resources. The Division assures compliance with applicable environmental and cultural resource statutes such as National Environmental Policy Act, Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, National Historic Preservation Act, Archeological Resources Protection Act, and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.

Tribal – Capacity Building:
Under Federal environmental statutes, EPA has the responsibility for protecting human health and the environment in Indian country with a special emphasis on building Tribal capacity to administer their own environmental programs. EPA has worked to establish the internal infrastructure and organize its activities in order to meet this responsibility such as the implementation of the Agencies Indian Policy.
