Partnership with EPA for the RE-Powering America’s Land Initiative

Purpose
The EPA and DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) are evaluating the feasibility of developing renewable energy production on Superfund, brownfields, and former landfill or mining sites. NREL is to evaluate the feasibility of developing renewable energy production on 26 Superfund, brownfields, and former landfill or mining sites.

Brownfields:
Brownfields are defined as real properties, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse, which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. (There is some statutory exclusion to this definition). The Brownfields Program is designed to empower states, Tribes, local communities, and other stakeholders in economic redevelopment to work together to prevent, assess, safely cleanup, and reuse Brownfields.
