Economic Development Administration - Brownfields

Purpose
The Economic Development Administration (EDA) mission is “to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy.”

EDA underwent reauthorization in 2004 and included the following brownfields-related provisions:

• Authorizes grants for projects to expand, redevelop or reuse brownfields, within EDA’s existing program structure.
• Authorizes grants for projects to develop brightfields sites, which will use solar energy technologies to develop abandoned or contaminated sites for commercial use.

Brownfields:
Brownfields are defined as real properties, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse, which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. (There is some statutory exclusion to this definition). The Brownfields Program is designed to empower states, Tribes, local communities, and other stakeholders in economic redevelopment to work together to prevent, assess, safely cleanup, and reuse Brownfields.
