EPA Goal 3: Cleaning Up Communities and
Advancing Sustainable Development

ARC – Brownfields Redevelopment

Purpose
To increase Appalachian communities’ participation in the Brownfield Economic Redevelopment Initiative, ARC and EPA developed a Memorandum of Understanding that coordinates policies and activities in support of brownfield assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment.

Brownfields:
Brownfields are defined as real properties, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse, which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. (There is some statutory exclusion to this definition). The Brownfields Program is designed to empower states, Tribes, local communities, and other stakeholders in economic redevelopment to work together to prevent, assess, safely cleanup, and reuse Brownfields.
