EPA Goal 2: Protecting America’s Waters |
Purpose
The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) supports the Obama Administration's call for
voluntary action to protect and restore priority watersheds in the region. USDA’s National
Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is working with its conservation partners in the
eight-state area to combat invasive species, protect watersheds and shorelines from
non-point source pollution, and restore wetlands and other habitat areas. As part
of an interagency funding agreement initiated by the EPA, the initiative encompasses
a broad partnership of federal, state, local and nongovernmental organizations
taking action in the Great Lakes Basin. NRCS is focusing conservation program funds
in the following watersheds of extreme ecological sensitivity: Genesee River,
Grand Calumet River and Harbor, Green Bay/Fox River, Maumee River, Saginaw River
and St. Louis River.

Geographic Program: Great Lakes Restoration Initiative:
The goal of the Great Lakes (GL) Program is to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the
Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem as required by the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and the Clean Water Act. EPA leads 16 federal
agencies in development and implementation of a GL Restoration Initiative to achieve that goal, including overseeing international
commitments in the GL Water Quality Agreement. GL Restoration Initiative funding is provided through EPA's GL National
Program Office, as described below.
