This IDOT brochure explains the Corridors for Tomorrow program stating that it will "revegetate much of right-of-way and interchanges along the interstate system with native species of plants to help restore Illinois' biodiversity." This effort involves the Department of Transportation, Department of Natural Resources, the Illinois Natural History Survey, state universities, and other interested groups.

The seeding section from the manual lists materials and equipment needed and discusses fertilizer and agricultural ground limestone application, seed bed preparation, seeding methods, seeding mixtures, and methods of measurement.

The Winter/Spring 1996 issue of IIT Update, p. 12, provided information about the new Environmental Research and Information Center: Through the Environmental Research and Information Center established in 1995, environmental engineering faculty at IIT's Rice Campus have joined with experts throughout the Midwest to help native vegetation return to the Great Lakes. Researchers hope to prove that the wide-spread introduction of native prairie plants on floodplains can relieve the conflict between conservation interests, who want to develop natural habitat areas, and agricultural interests, who want to use the floodplain to produce cash crops.

The Center's approach relies on the premise that the private sector plays an important role in the process of achieving sustainable development, and that creative, alternative solutions must be considered, requiring diverse input from a multidisciplinary task force. The Center has a seminar series that is free and open to the public.

The INPS brochure states that the society is "dedicated to the preservation, conservation, and study of the native plants, vegetation, and biological communities of Illinois. It is also pledged to the education of the public as to the value of the native flora and its habitat, and the publication of related information." Each of six chapters has meetings and field trips. Publications include The Harbinger, a quarterly newsletter, and Erigenia, the Journal of the Illinois Native Plant Society.

This book has color photographs of plants, some of which are considered weedy and grow in areas subjected to disturbance, but also has photographs of true native flora, particularly those which occur in prairie remnants. Accompanying each photograph is a description of the features of the plant and statements concerning habitat, range in Illinois, and time of flowering.
