Description:

Abstract:: This Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) contains physical and cultural feature names and location information for the State of Nevada. This point overage was created from the Nevada GNIS place names coverage available from the U.S.Geological Survey (USGS). It is a subset of incorporated and un-incorporated cities and towns in Nevada.
Purpose:: This GNIS data is intended to be used as a supplemental base layer to support BLM Nevada's planning and business needs. The original GNIS was developed by the U.S.Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) to promote the standardization of feature names.
Supplemental_Information:: GNIS data is available through the USGS website, and is being compiled in phases. The first phase is complete for the entire U.S., and entailed the collection of names from Federal sources including large-scale USGS topographic maps, Office of Coast Survey charts, U.S. Forest Service maps, and digital datasets distributed by the Federal Communications Commission, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The second phase of data collection is complete or in progress for about 90% of the U.S., and captures names from State, locally, and other published current and historical maps, charts, and texts.

The source GNIS text data included approximately 500 records with Latitude and Longitude locations attributed as "unknown". These locations would not convert to a geospatial point location so they were removed from the dataset. The USGS is continually updating the GNIS data as new information becomes available.

NV_deci GNIS text data and Readme (metadata) files were downloaded from the USGS Geonames website. (<http://geonames.usgs.gov>) There were no field headings, and there were approximately 500 records with unknown Latitude Longitude locations.

Four "Source Latitude/Longitude" fields, Estimated Population, and Federal Status fields were not needed and were deleted from the dataset. The 500 records with unknown locations were also deleted. Field headings were added as defined in the USGS metadata, and the resulting data set was re-saved as an MS_DOS.csv file.

The resulting CSV file was added to an ESRI ArcMap 8.3 map document based on the X, Y Decimal Degree Latitude and Longitude locations. The results were reviewed and then exported as a shapefile. The native geographic projection was defined, then the shapefile was reprojected to UTM Zone 11 NAD83. The resulting shapefile was then converted to a coverage named GNIS2004.
