Abstract:
This dataset is a summary of 21 years of historical fire polygons in the state of Nevada. It is comprised of 5 subclasses of the region coverage type. These subclasses are broken into 5 year incremental groups beginning at 2000 to 1981 and the fifth subclass covers 2001 to 2010. The attribute data includes the Unit ID, Fire number and Year of each fire polygon.There are gaps in the data where such attributes were not available or the polygons are unburned islands within fire perimeters.
Purpose:
This was meant to be a central source of historical GIS fire data to be used in other analysis supporting fire management efforts, land use planning, and rehabilitation of lands affected by fire.

Field staff collected the fire perimeters for the years 2000-2002 mostly by the use of various GPS receivers. A few perimeters were screen digitized from background topographic map DRGs. After these shapefiles and coverages were gathered from their sources they were reviewed for positional accuracy, attribute correctness and completeness. Often, only the bare minimum of information was available to input for a fire's attribute table since the source of the files failed to provide such data. After I gathered as much data that could be reasonably done, the files were then merged using the Xtools extension in ArcView 3.2a. The file was imported into ArcInfo as a region to preserve the associated attributes with the "Shapearc" command where the attributes were organized with "Additems" and "Pullitems" commands to conform to National BLM and GeoMAC fire perimeter database standards. (Only the 2001 and 2002 polygons contained the National BLM and GeoMAC standard attributes). The coverage was also converted from region topology to coverage polygon topology and topologically cleaned with a tolerance of 0.9 file units (meters) and then merged into the "fires01_10" subclass. For the 1999 data, Elko and Winnemucca district fire polygons were digitized under contract from paper maps generally of 1:100,000 scale with 1:24,000 scale also used. This data was compiled into one coverage, "Fireper" by GIS coordinator Mark O'Brien in preparation for the AML compilation steps described later. Pre-1998 data was digitized from paper maps of unknown scale. California data was digitized from fire report sketches with township and range descriptions and GCDB coordinates to georeference the polygons. Two new subclasses were added recently: "fires_ca370" and "fires_sheldon". They were not included in the AML compilation step at NSTC. Minimal information was supplied with the data. The CA370 data source is Dino Borhgi at the BLM Surprise district office. No information was supplied as to the method used to gather this layer or its accuracy. The Sheldon NWR subclass source is Jenny Barnett at the Sheldon Hart Mt. National Wildlife Refuge of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The data for this subclass was gathered by on-screen digitizing of hand-drawn fire perimeters on paper maps. The data for 1985-1996 was digitized under contract by the U.S. Forest Service and the data for 1997-2001 was ditized by Jenny Barnett of Sheldon NWR. The next step was completed by Mike Badar at the BLM NSTC with several AMLs to compile the data by year and then into region subclasses that are in 5-year increments. These increments begin at the year 2000 going back to 1981. In 2003 the years 2001 and 2002 were compiled and given the standard items as the previous region subclasses. The commands "Polyregion" and "Union" were used to add these new years to the coverage. The 1999 polygons in each of the subclasses were updated from the polygon coverage "Fireper". The coordinate system used for the source files was UTM zone 11 NAD27. However, this had to be assumed for some of the less complete files since this information was not provided to me.
