MAIA Research Programs

In addition to improving the environmental assessment process, MAIA will strengthen the scientific basis of EMAP through integrated, place-based research that addresses scientific issues raised by the National Research Council (NRC) and other peer reviews. When fully developed, MAIA will provide a suite of environmental assessment tools to integrate land cover information, other measures of human-caused environmental stress, and the biological assessment of multiple resource categories:

Estuaries
Surface Waters
Landscape Ecology
Forests
Agro-ecosystems

MAIA will address comparative risk assessment goals by focusing on the following basic questions:

Is there a problem?
Where is the problem?
What is the cause of the problem?
Are things changing?
What does it mean to a community?
What can we do about it?
