Note to Data Users

Request for Acknowledgment
EMAP requests that all individuals who download EMAP data acknowledge the source of these data in any reports, papers, or presentations. If you use these data, please include a statement similar to "Some or all of the data described in this article were produced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through its Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP), https://www.epa.gov/emap/."

Differences Among Data Sets
There are several different ways to look at the same data on this Web site. For example, you can view data by EMAP Resource Group or by Geographic Area. Estuaries data can be obtained as ASCII files, or as SAS datasets, or from the National Coastal Assessment Database (an Oracle database), or from the ArcIms mapping application. Depending on which method you select, you may get slightly different datasets. These differences will be of two kinds:

  1. Some of the variables will vary slightly in precision (number of significant digits) as a result of different storage formats. These differences are usually within the measurement error and will not affect statistical results.
  2. Some of the storage formats may contain more detailed information (e.g., more variables, more replicates) than other storage formats. Check to see that you are getting what you want.
