Evaluation of the Hispanic HANES Database

Project Purpose

To evaluate the database for usefulness as a reference (comparison) database for current and future environmental health studies involving Hispanic populations.

Project Description

As part of the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) series, Hispanic HANES sampled 12,000 Hispanics (including 7,500 in the southwestern U.S.) from 1982-1984. In addition to extensive health questionnaires and physical examinations, biological fluids were collected and analyzed for various markers including some pesticides and metals. This database has undergone additional quality control checks and documentation. Precursor comparisons are being made with the NHANES-II data. The objective of this initiative is to evaluate the database for usefulness as a reference (comparison) database for current and future environmental health studies involving Hispanic populations.

Accomplishments

Quality checks completed for NHANES-II pesticide residue and metabolite data (12/1997).
Interim report "Pesticide Residues and Metabolites in Urine and Serum of Hispanic HANES Subjects", January 1998.
Complete data cleaning and documentation of Hispanic HANES (9/99).

Expected Outcomes

Perform preliminary and descriptive analysis of database (9/99).
Comparison of pesticide residues and metabolites in NHANES-II and Hispanic HANES (9/00).
