US/Mexico Border Bi-national Environmental Health Connections E-Group

Project Purpose

To establish a mechanism for communication among and between U.S. and Mexico Health Professionals in order to:

Identify common health and environmental problems which impact on the status of public health along the border region.
Identify needs which can be addressed through collaboration.
Share information about solutions and intervention models which have been successfully implemented among peers in order to facilitate resolution of problems and address needs.

Project Description

This project will include researching individuals and organizations along both sides of the US Mexico Border who have a special interest and expertise in environmental health and securing their participation in an interactive E-Group to be established for the purposes stated above. Co-funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and co-sponsored by the National Center for Farmworker Health (NCFH) and the Secretariat of Health and Assistance (SSA) in Mexico, this E-Group is designed to be long term in nature and a project lasting well beyond the initial set up stage. Given the advantages of electronic technology over print, we anticipate a tool which can be kept up to date and reflect current issues along the border.

Accomplishments

Through research and self selection, creation of a data base of individuals and organizations that are on the front line of border environmental health; exchange of information among those individuals including sentinel events which have not yet made it into the literature and; exchange of publications which reflect issues in that region; identification of models of success which can be shared among peers.

Expected Outcomes

Documents exchanged via this mechanism will be cataloged and stored in the NCFH Resource Center, for use by others seeking this information, articles on the availability of the E-Group will be published in the NCFH Newsline.
