Irregular Water/NAPL/Air Distribution Copyright 1988 CRC Press

This photo shows another three phase distribution of water/NAPL and air. The fluid distribution is anything but regular. There appears to be a thin film of NAPL in some places, while at others thicker films coat the water layer. Water/NAPL Distribution Copyright 1988 CRC Press
There is an important contrast between the NAPL distributions in two- and three-phase systems. The residual NAPL saturation in a two-phase system is usually higher than that in a three-phase system. The simple reason is that in a three-phase system the air and NAPL must "share" the largest fraction of the pore space, while in a two-phase system the NAPL alone occupies the largest fraction of the pore space.
