Contaminant concentrations depend on the amount and solubility of each chemical in the source. For typical gasolines these effects cause the maximum concentrations to generally follow the pattern MTBE > benzene > xylenes. Once in the aquifer, these are affected to varying degrees by biodegradation.

Depiction of source strength effects on concentration.

source Color of the contaminant source
xylenes Color of the xylenes plume
benzene Color of the benzene plume
MTBE Color of the MTBE plume
