As for time, imagine that the figure represents a plume at different times in its life history.

The top plume represents a young plume. There is less separation of contaminants, because there hasn't been much time for the plume to expand.

The bottom plume represents an older plume. There is more separation of contaminants, because the contaminants have been in the water longer and more separation can occur.
