Purpose
- This interactive map helps homeowners and builders in Region 9 find organizations that sell salvaged building materials for reuse in their own building projects.
- The EPA encourages reuse of local materials salvaged from ‘deconstructed’ buildings to reduce waste and to decrease the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production and transportation of new building materials.
- Deconstruction is the process of taking apart buildings so that the materials can be conserved through re-use and recycling.
- Other benefits of reusing building materials include: conserving virgin forests, reducing transportation costs, and creating local jobs.

- Deconstruction is a key way to reduce the more than 170 million tons (equal to 3.2 pounds per person per day) of building-related construction and demolition debris that is generated in the U.S. annually; more than 50% of which is landfilled.
