Recycling Technology Validation Projects

The Clean Washington Center (CWC), with funding from EPA, the National Institute for Standards and Technology’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership, and the State of Washington 
have managed and documented over 70 projects validating recycling technologies
or recycled-content products. Initially, the CWC was only able to provide funding to Washington state businesses, manufacturers and service providers, and to Washington state government agencies. In 1998, the funding expanded to cover projects nationwide.
The validation projects vary in scope and cover a range of recyclable commodities, including:
- Converting to the use of recycled feedstocks;
- Recycled-content product performance and aesthetics testing;
- Market development programs, including buy recycled programs;
- Decision tools; and
- Overcoming technical, regulatory, and other barriers to using recycled materials. In addition, CWC has worked with experts in the field to develop and publish recycling best practices for plastics, glass, wood waste, and scrap tires and rubber.
EPA’s Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program
Verifies commercial-ready, private sector technologies through pilot programs, one of which involves technologies in pollution prevention, recycling, and waste treatment. Preference is given to technologies in the electronics, metal plating and finishing, petroleum refining, iron and steel manufacturing, and printing industries.
