Emerging Contaminants - Nanomaterials

Federal funding is financing technology innovation and more than 100 green jobs.

EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson recently joined scientists, faculty, technology innovators and students at the University of California, Los Angeles to tour its Center for Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology. The center has been awarded a $24 million grant from the EPA and the National Science Foundation, and is working to train the next generation of nano-scale scientists and engineers. The facility is one of the nation’s only centers researching predictive toxicology of nanomaterials, and is developing a new approach to identify impacts and environmental hazards of nanomaterials before they become widely used in the environment.

Administrator Jackson also participated in a roundtable at the University of Southern California with community leaders, students and faculty to discuss the Agency’s environmental justice priorities.

The visit was part of Administrator Jackson’s ongoing efforts to speak with Americans across the country, especially students, about EPA’s work to protect people’s health and the environment and support job growth.
