The Arizona Route 66 Partnership
Introduction
For over four decades, Route 66 operated as one of the country’s main arteries. However, by 1970, four-lane highways bypassed the “Mother Road.” Of course, in the highway’s “heyday,” several gas stations opened up to satisfy the fuel needs of travelers. Unfortunately, many of these fueling stations leaked petroleum into the soil and groundwater.
The Route 66 Partnership is a network of local, state and federal agencies and organizations that helps communities identify resources available for assessment, cleanup and redevelopment at current and former leaking underground storage tank (LUST) sites, abandoned gas stations, and other underutilized sites along Route 66 in Northern Arizona.
