Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) for Colleges and Universities
EPA New England encourages colleges and universities to take a holistic view of their campuses, working together to grow in a sustainable manner and improve their overall environmental performance through:
- adopting long-term, sustainable practices
- improving compliance
- cooperative sharing of information and resources
- effective peer mentoring in the use of environmental management systems (EMSs)
To achieve these goals and foster continuous improvement in environmental performance, EPA New England and the University of Massachusetts-Lowell EMS Service Program 
developed a guide to help colleges and universities to design and implement environmental or sustainability programs, or to implement a full Environmental Management System (EMS) in a streamlined, cost-effective manner.
