Design and Analysis Specifics for Indiana Streams

Information on Indiana Streams is presented following the Design and Analysis Processes, only portions of sections of Indiana's Surface Water Quality Assessment Program relevant to streams is presented. For information on Indiana's surface water quality monitoring see: www.state.in.us/idem/water/programs/. Exit Disclaimer

Example is based on R 2.2.1 and psurvey.analysis_2.9 (other R versions please see: R Compatability Notice)

Program Goals, Objectives, Design, Illustrative Example, Indicators, Analysis, Results

Indiana Monitoring Program Goals:

  1. Measure the physical, chemical, bacteriological, and biological quality of the aquatic environment in all river basins and identify factors responsible for impairment.
  2. Assess the impact of human or other activities that occur in all river basins and the probable effects of these activities on the quality of the dynamic ecosystem and drinking water source protection.
  3. Identify trends through the analysis of environmental data from a variety of sources and make recommendations for the protection of designated uses of the surface water resources of the State.
  4. Provide environmental quality assessment to support the water quality management program in partnership with customers and stakeholders.

Illustrative Example:
An example based on the Upper Wabash Basin is presented to facilitate understanding the design, analysis and estimation procedures. The Design was completed in 1998, field sampling conducted in 1998, and results reported in 2000. All files needed to reproduce the example analysis can be downloaded, including the statistical software R and code. Results for this example are included for comparison and checking. However, the Indiana 2000 Report combined the results from the original analysis with other data and the results presented on this web site are not intended to reproduce those in the Report.

Analysis Approach

The analysis incorporates the design features and estimates indicator status for the target population. Estimates are prepared for impairment status, based on Indiana Water Quality criteria, for both stream length and percent for the target population. The Illustrative example includes both tabular and graphical estimates.
