      Title: San Pedro Vegetation Map

  Description:
Abstract: This data set is a digital vegetation map of the San Pedro Riparian
National Conservation Area and Babocomari River. The map was produced
by manual interpretation of true-color, stereo aerial photography
flown in November 2000. Standard U.S. Geological Survey Digital
Orthophoto Quadrangles served as the image base for polygon
digitization. The National Vegetation Classification System was
used as the framework for determining the map units. For all
polygons, floristic attributes of physiognomic class and alliance
and structural attributes of dominant life form canopy cover,
total canopy cover, and stand height are recorded. The nominal
minimum mapping unit is one hectare for the floodplain portion of
the study site and four hectares in the upland portion.
Purpose: The long-term purpose of this project is to monitor change in
potential habitat of the endangered southwest willow flycatcher
in the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area
and Babocomari River. Vegetation maps will be produced in 2004 and
2008 using the same methodology and will serve as input
              into a trend analysis.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Field verification of this data set occurred in February

      Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
Logical_Consistency_Report: This data set was compiled and edited by three
photo analysts. Significant effort was made to
                              eliminate individual analyst bias. Logical
                              consistency checks included:
				1. land cover and alliance combinations
				2. land cover and dominant canopy cover
				3. dominant canopy cover and total canopy
				   cover
				4. land cover and stand height
Completeness_Report: The nominal minimum mapping unit for this project
was one hectare for floodplain alliances and four
hectares for upland alliances. The exception to this
rule was open water - all visible water bodies
were mapped. The mapping scheme used is based on
                       the National Vegetation Classification System
established by the Federal Geographic Data Committee.
  Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: USGS Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles (DOQs)
were used as the base imagery for this project.
DOQs comply with national map accuracy standards.
In general, the vegetation alliances depicted in
this data set are not well-defined spatial entities
whose boundaries are directly observable in
the field. Considerable judgment is required
during the photo interpretation process to
                                    delineate polygons.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy: The only attribute of this data set with a vertical
dimension is stand height. Alliances were attributed
with stand heights based on stereoscopic viewing of
aerial photography. No attempt was made to derive
                                  height information via photogrammetric techniques.

Process_Description: The compilation stage of this project involved manual
                           interpretation of stereoscopic aerial photography.
The digitizing and attribution stage of this project
involved heads-up digitizing of the photo overlays.
ArcView 3.2 and custom attribution software were used.
