State Letters
- EPA sent out letters to the 33 states with impoundments to update them on the status of CCR assessments in their state.
- Each state received a letter to the head of that state's department of the environment, and another to the chief engineer at the state body responsible for dam safety.
Coal Combustion Residuals Impoundment Assessment Letters, by State

After assessing 235 coal-fired utility plants in 33 states, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) substantially completed its effort to assess the structural integrity of coal combustion residuals (CCR) impoundments in the United States. The Agency does, however, continue to finalize the facilities assessed in Rounds 10, 11 and 12. The EPA provided the reports and recommendations for any corrective measures to the facilities and worked with each facility to secure its commitment to complete any corrective measures.
The letters below to each of the 33 states explain that an ongoing, routine program to assess these units and to take necessary corrective measures is needed to ensure the units' continued structural integrity. The ongoing responsibility for this lies first with each facility's owner and operator. States also have a critical role in monitoring and overseeing these units, so the EPA is providing the states with all the information it has on the facilities in their respective states. *
