Region 3 RCRA Program Moves Towards Greater Public Access to Information

One of the three main themes of the RCRA reforms goals is to enhance community involvement, including greater public access to information on cleanup progress. Region 3's Corrective Action program has moved in that direction by posting fact sheets detailing the current status of cleanup activity at all of our high priority sites on our Region 3 website. These fact sheets are updated quarterly to ensure that timely information is available for the public. In addition, we are advancing our internal data accessibility through the deployment of our data integration and analysis tool, DIANA. Currently, this tool enables our internal users to access and manipulate facility data from all RCRA and other EPA programs in a GIS mapping environment (geospatial) including hotlinks from the facility location viewed on a map to our fact sheets stored on the web, and to other Agency initiatives, such as Envirofacts facility profiles and OECA compliance reports. Inclusion of pre-processed information as priority indices, enable the user to prioritize potential risk, or identify vulnerable populations for environmental justice. Future plans include web-enabling certain features of DIANA for communities who use environmental information in their decision-making process as well as environmental regulatory agencies at the state and local levels who are concerned with inspection targeting, resource prioritization and comparative risk, environmental justice and trend analysis.
