Notice of Request by Astaris LLC for an Extension of the LDRs Effective Date for Five Waste Streams Generated at their Pocatello, Idaho Facility

On November 1, 2000, Astaris LLC Pocatello (Astaris), formerly FMC Pocatello, submitted to the EPA a request to renew their existing case-by-case CBC extension for five waste streams for an additional year, until May 26, 2002.

Astaris has told EPA that this renewal is necessary because there is no available treatment capacity for these waste streams and because additional time is needed to complete the construction of the LDR Treatment Plant being built to manage the wastes. The LDR Treatment Plant is scheduled to be brought on-line by May 2002.

EPA published a notice in the Federal Register on March 16, 2001 announcing its proposed decision to grant the renewal. EPA also published a notice in the Federal Register on April 24, 2001 announcing that Astaris had sent EPA information about a new treatment technology, called High Temperature Dust Filtration. Astaris informed EPA that it was thinking of using this new technology, in place of the LDR Treatment Plant, to treat the five waste streams.

EPA plans to publish its final decision on the astaris request in the Federal Register before the May 26, 2001 expiration of the existing CBC extension.
