Retaining Our Sense of Place by Managing Our Highway

Retaining Our Sense of Place by Managing Our Highway (2008) describes a Smart Growth Implementation Assistance for Coastal Communities project to help Pamlico County, North Carolina, produce a vision for the county’s growth and address growth associated with the expansion of Highway 55. The county wanted strategies to guide development along the highway to fit the county’s vision and needs, as well as better development techniques for the entire county. This vision was informed by input from Pamlico County residents.

Some options presented in the report include preparing a corridor plan for Highway 55 and developing ordinances to implement it, as well as design guidelines to help the county ensure it gets the type of development its residents want.
