Making a Visible Difference in Communities Home

Detroit, MI

EPA worked with federal partners, state agencies, municipal staff, and local stakeholders to align resources to support the city of Detroit’s economic, environmental and social revitalization.  Much of this work addressed challenges that linger from Detroit’s industrial past and recent bankruptcy. Projects included:

  • green infrastructure solutions to combined sewer overflows
  • water quality permitting compliance
  • Superfund emergency removals
  • brownfield redevelopment
  • air quality monitoring and enforcement
  • reducing environmental impacts in overburdened neighborhoods

EPA also supported the city’s efforts to build resiliency and sustainability into everyday activities. Examples included:

  • adopting green practices on over 7,500 residential demolitions
  • converting 40 vacant lots into rain gardens
  • repairing road infrastructure as green streets
  • analyzing 120 municipal buildings for potential energy savings using Portfolio Manager
  •  incorporating new clean diesel trucks to transport heavy goods near the Port of Detroit
